Insurance information for United Kingdom
If you are going to study and live in the United Kingdom, you want to be fully prepared before starting your adventure. Among other things, you want to make sure your insurance covers everything you need, without paying too much.
International students, who will be in the United Kingdom for more than 6 months, can have access to the National Health Service while pursuing their degree in the UK.
Students that are EU citizens should be in possession of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) that gives them the right to benefit from free NHS treatment. This is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland or the United Kingdom under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country. Your EHIC can be issued by your national health insurance provider.
Students without a European Health Insurance Card, can also gain access to the National Health Service but are required to pay an annual surcharge.
It is important to understand that the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is not always enough and that the NHS might not cover:
- Additional medical costs
- Home contents and baggage
- Legal aid
